TinkerCad Academy#2: Why Do We Use CAD?
Objectives
Videos on Why we use CAD
Teacher/Parent Prep:
Watch the videos below and see if there are any other videos you find interesting recommended to you by Youtube about CAD, feel free to show your student these as well as encourage them to find videos they find interesting related to CAD.
Examples of CAD in Design
Discussion points:
What were the moving parts in the simulation for the Camera Slider.
How do you think CAD helped the students build their Camera Slider.
How would you know how something is going to work in real life before you put all the time and energy into building it
Discussion Points:
Why do you think CAD was needed to design this truck?
What is the difficult part about building every functional part of a house into a truck?
How would CAD help someone overcome this difficulty?
Documentation:
Download the Screencastify Video tool extension to your browser. Document your TinkerCad challenges by recording a short video of yourself answering the discussion questions or showing off a creation! Save your journal’s URL for your own reference, or SHARE your video on Latino STEM Alliance’s Facebook page or @latinostem on Twitter to show us and your fellow students and community how your work with TinkerCad has been going!
Teacher Points:
TinkerCAD is a simple CAD program designed for students. There are many advanced professional CAD programs such as Solidworks, AutoCAD, and SolidEdge. Most of these professional programs can not only be used for design but can simulate stress tests on the object. Additionally, the moving parts can be sent into a simulation to test fail points and coding. Our goal is to get the students to think that CAD is a useful way to design things. They may continue to play with TinkerCAD outside of LSA.
